There is a myth from Ethiopia dating to 1000 a.d. about the discovery of coffee bean plant that goes something like this…
Kaldi, a goat herder, realized that his goats have not returned from the field. It was getting close to dusk, and he was worried about their saftey. He decided to go and find them. Not only did Kaldi find his goats safe, he found them eating red berries and dancing! Kaldi was curious about these new berries, and after trying them he felt much more alert. Before long he was dancing along with his goats. Of course the bush in this story is the coffee bean plant, and the world hasn’t been the same since.
Although coffee doesn’t make me want to dance with farm animals, it is just the kick I need to start my day. There is nothing else better to wake up to. Coffee has been used for medicinal purposes, as a social centerpiece, and today it is a staple of our culture. Finding someone who doesn’t drink coffee is like finding someone who doesn’t like puppies.
Think about it, what other beverages to we drink on a regular basis throughout the day? Coffee is second only to water. We drink coffee for breakfast, we drink coffee at work, we drink coffee with lunch, and after dinner with desert. Sometimes we even mix it with whiskey on special occasions.
The flavor, the aroma, and most importantly – the caffeine! So here is to your your next cup of joe!
